Public portfolio pages
Turn on Public gallery for a Portfolio collection, set its slug, and visitors open a dedicated /portfolio/your-slug page with hero, layout, and browsing controls—defaults come from Settings → Portfolio; override per collection under Manage portfolio → Settings → Public page.
When Public gallery is on for a Portfolio collection, visitors can open a dedicated page on your site:
https://your-site.example/portfolio/your-slug
That URL is a full-screen gallery experience built for the collection — hero banner, layout, and browsing controls you configure under Settings → Portfolio or per collection under Manage portfolio → Settings tab → Public page. For layout families and controls, see Portfolio layout settings. For cinematic animated galleries (eligible plans), see Motion portfolio pages. For overlay browsing and shareable single-image URLs, continue to Photo detail pages and Portfolio lightbox settings.
Standard versus motion presentation
Each collection uses one public presentation at a time:
| Track | What visitors see | Where you configure |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Grid, immersive browsing, or chronological (timeline / journal) — scroll or stage-based layouts | Settings tab → Public page (Portfolio layout settings) |
| Motion | Full-viewport animated gallery — one featured image at a time with cinematic transitions | Motion tab (Portfolio motion settings) |
The URL stays /portfolio/{slug} either way. Turning on Motion presentation replaces the standard gallery body with your chosen motion template; it does not change slug, privacy, or whether the page is public.
Motion presentation requires an eligible subscription plan. Standard layout settings on Public page are ignored while motion is active, but Lightbox, photo detail pages, and commerce flags on Settings still apply when you enable them.
Prerequisites
Dashboard → Portfolio → a collection with Public gallery enabled and a slug
Site defaults (optional): Dashboard → Settings → Portfolio
Three layout families
Layouts are grouped by how visitors browse, not by arbitrary toggles. Pick one layout per collection; only controls for that family appear in the dashboard.
Grid galleries (scroll the page)
Best for storefronts, large sets, and scan-many-photos workflows.
| Layout | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Masonry | Staggered grid; keeps mixed portrait and landscape framing |
| Square grid | Uniform tiles; optional aspect ratio (square, landscape, portrait, wide, auto) |
| Justified rows | Fixed row height; tile widths follow each image's aspect ratio |
Immersive browsing (one photo at a time)
Best for client sessions, cinematic sets, and distraction-free viewing.
| Layout | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Split pane | Main stage plus paginated thumbnail rail; ← / → keyboard; desktop: rail left, stage right; phone and portrait tablet: stage above rail |
| Book spread | Image and thumb strip beside a caption reading pane (title and description from Media); side-by-side on large screens, stacked on phones |
| Stage carousel | Large stage plus horizontal thumb strip below |
Immersive layouts use a fixed viewport band — most of the screen below your site header — while browsing. Visitors move through photos without scrolling the whole page. Book spread sizes to its content on smaller viewports.
Chronological (story-first layouts)
Best for narrative collections — dated archives and diary-style storytelling.
| Layout | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Timeline | Groups media into year, month, or day sections (chosen automatically from your dates). Group by EXIF capture date (default) or upload date. Undated files go in an Undated section. Each expanded section uses an inner grid (masonry, square grid, or justified). |
| Journal | Alternating text and image rows down the page (copy left / image right, then flipped). Heading uses each item’s caption (falls back to title); body uses description. Set those fields on Media (portfolio overrides when present). Photos open lightbox or photo detail from click behavior; videos play inline in the row (height capped so portrait clips stay readable). |
Hero (top of the page)
Optional banner above the gallery:
| Style | What visitors see |
|---|---|
| Cover banner | Full-width 16:9 cover with title overlay |
| Short banner | Compact cover band (~40% of viewport height) |
| None | Gallery starts under the site header |
Toggle Show title and Show description independently. Banner styles require a cover image on the portfolio.
Click behavior, lightbox, and photo pages
On grid and chronological layouts (timeline and journal) you choose click behavior: open lightbox, go to photo detail page, or (immersive only) stage only. Journal videos play in the page; image rows still follow click behavior.
| Next step | Guide |
|---|---|
| Layout families and dashboard controls | Portfolio layout settings |
| Animated motion templates | Motion portfolio pages |
| Overlay styling and captions | Portfolio lightbox settings |
| Shareable single-image URLs, EXIF, print | Photo detail pages |
Immersive layouts default to stage only; enable lightbox or photo page if you want those paths too.
Implementation steps
- Open Portfolio and select a collection (or create one).
- Turn on Public gallery and set a unique slug.
- Under Settings → Portfolio, set site-wide defaults for layout, hero, and spacing — or leave fields as Inherit site default until you need overrides.
- Open Manage portfolio → Settings tab → Public page to override layout or hero for this collection only.
- Save and open
https://your-site/portfolio/{slug}on your live or preview site. - Test on phone and desktop; adjust layout under Portfolio layout settings if needed.
What your visitors see
A branded gallery page on your domain: optional hero, your chosen layout family, and browsing that matches your click-behavior settings. Privacy settings on the collection still apply — public, unlisted, or password-protected links behave the same on the dedicated URL.
Verifying your setup
- Public gallery is on and slug is set.
- Live or preview URL loads without errors.
- Hero, layout, and click behavior match your intent.
- Privacy mode matches the audience (marketing versus client proofing).
