Portfolio geo visibility and impact maps
Control how photo locations appear on public impact maps for a ArtInStack portfolio.
Coordinates live on each Media file. A Portfolio collection decides whether those locations may appear on public impact maps for that album—and how precisely. Site-wide defaults in Settings apply to new portfolios unless you change them per collection.
Prerequisites
Coordinates on files: Media (EXIF or Set location on map)
Portfolio: Dashboard → Portfolio → Portfolio Settings
Site default (optional): Dashboard → Settings → Privacy & security
Published map: Pages with an Impact map block (see add-impact-map-to-a-page)
Public map location (per portfolio)
Open Portfolio → Portfolio Settings → Visibility & SEO → Public map location:
| Setting | Visitor impact |
|---|---|
| Public (redacted) — recommended | Pins appear on impact maps at a fuzzed location (privacy-friendly circle, stable per image). |
| Public (exact) | Pins use precise coordinates on impact maps—only when you are comfortable exposing exact GPS. |
| Private — hidden on public impact maps | No pins from this portfolio on public maps, even if files have GPS in Media. |
Redacted maps still use your numeric fuzz policy from Settings → Privacy & security when coordinates are approximate.
Site-wide default for new portfolios
Settings → Privacy & security → location / geo defaults (wording may vary) sets the starting Public map location for new portfolios. Change any existing collection in its own Portfolio Settings.

Relationship to photo detail pages
| Feature | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Impact map + Public map location | Map pins on a page block |
| Show EXIF on photo detail page | Camera metadata tab on a single photo URL |
| Hide from Search Engines (portfolio) | SEO indexing for that collection—not the same as map redaction |
You can keep maps redacted while leaving EXIF off on photo detail pages, or the reverse—settings are independent.
Implementation steps
- Confirm images have locations in Media (EXIF or manual pin).
- Add images to the portfolio.
- Open Portfolio Settings → choose Public map location for this collection.
- Review Settings → Privacy & security if you need to change the default for future portfolios.
- Add an Impact map block to a page, select this portfolio, publish, and test on your public site.
When no pins appear on the live map
| Cause | Mitigation |
|---|---|
| Portfolio set to Private | Switch to Public (redacted) or Public (exact). |
Files have no geo on the media record | Set location on map in Media. |
| Images not in the selected portfolio | Add them to the collection linked on the block. |
| Block date filter excludes all photos | Clear or widen observation from/to dates. |
| Wrong portfolio on the block | Re-select the collection in block settings. |
Verifying your setup
- At least one located image in the portfolio.
- Public map location matches your privacy intent.
- Published Impact map shows pins (or intentionally none when Private).
