Evidence of Impact
Add an Evidence of Impact block to a page, point it at a field survey, and publish a timeline of photos with date, place, and species provenance for donors and partners.
Evidence of Impact is a page block that tells a field story from a survey, not from a curated gallery. Visitors see time-ordered photos with provenance (date, safe place, taxon), a deployment map when stations exist, optional public filters, and an optional donate control after the evidence.
It is not an artistic portfolio gallery. It is not the Impact Map block (that still uses a portfolio). Evidence reads observations attached to the survey you choose.
For a fuller program page that embeds Evidence plus place and fundraising framing, use Conservation Story.
Judgment for skeptical donors also lives in Evidence storytelling for skeptical donors. This page is the click-path how-to.
Prerequisites
- A plan that includes field surveys (Projects → Surveys visible)
- At least one survey with media attached through observations (deployment stations and/or walkovers)
- Open the page editor on the program page you want to publish
- Optional: a donation product if you want a give button inside the block (Fundraising campaigns for conservation)
How media enters the feed
Photos appear in Evidence when they have observations on that survey:
| Path | Where you work | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed station | Survey → deployment → Library / Upload | Observation linked to survey + deployment |
| Walkover / direct | Survey → Direct observations / walkovers | Observation linked to survey, no deployment; place from media location |
Tag species in the observation editor (also available from Media). See Tag species and observations and Field surveys and deployments.
Until observations point at the survey, the block has nothing to show.
Add the block
- Open the page in the editor.
- From Blocks, add Evidence of Impact (shown when field surveys are on your plan).
- Select the block. In traits, choose the Survey that should feed the timeline.
- Pick a Layout, then Save and Preview.
Layouts
| Layout | What visitors see |
|---|---|
| Minimal | Compact map (stations), list-first timeline, donate after the timeline |
| Split | Media stage beside the map; donate under the map; filters and timeline under that pair |
| Full story | Full-width stage, then meta, map, filters, timeline; donate after the timeline |
Filters sit as the header of the timeline (under stage and map) so menus do not cover the media.
Settings that matter
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Survey | Required source. Active or completed surveys only. |
| Group by | Clusters the timeline by date or species (presentation only). |
| Public filters | Lets visitors narrow by station, species, and date. Safe for anonymous visitors. |
| From / To | Editor window on observation date (limits what you publish). |
| Max items | Caps how many items load (default 24). |
| Show provenance | Date, place, and related chips on items. |
| Show taxon | Species labels on items. |
| Require proof | Hides an item until it has at least one of: observation date, safe public place, or taxon. |
| Campaign framing | Optional campaign title above the survey name. |
Require proof (plain language)
Turn Require proof on when you want only publishable evidence on the page. An item needs any one of date, safe place, or taxon. A frame with none of those stays a nice photo in the survey workspace until you add proof.
Items still awaiting identification can remain visible when they otherwise meet the bar. The quiet label is intentional: unfinished IDs show you are not overclaiming.
Donation inside the block
Click the Donate control inside the block to choose a donation product and CTA label. The donate nest hides on the public site when donations are off your plan or no product is set. Prefer one ask after proof is visible. Do not stack a second donate block on the same page.
Place labels and privacy
Evidence place chips and deployment map pins follow the same Data Governance cascade as Impact Map and GBIF Prepare (threat tiers, species overrides, embargoes, then your Geo privacy baseline). Softened place labels are expected for sensitive work. Exact nest GPS does not belong on the public Evidence feed.
When several photos share a camera station, place chips follow that station’s strictest rule, so a common species on the same deployment as a threatened one will not print the station name the map is hiding.
Impact Map remains a separate block with portfolio geo settings. Do not treat Evidence’s deployment map as a substitute for Impact Map privacy policy. See Impact maps and location privacy for conservation and Data Governance for conservation.
Steps
- Confirm the survey has tagged observations (stations and/or walkovers).
- Open the program page → add Evidence of Impact.
- Select the survey; choose Split or Full story if you want the media stage.
- Turn on Require proof when you want the proof gate.
- Optionally set campaign framing and click Donate to attach a product.
- Save, Preview signed out, then Publish.
Verifying your setup
- The published page shows survey media in time order with provenance chips.
- Station filters and map pins match deployments that have media.
- With Require proof on, bare frames without date, place, or taxon stay off the feed.
- Awaiting-identification rows stay quiet; they do not invent a species name.
- Donate appears only when a product is set and donations are allowed.
- Place chips stay softened when your location defaults require it.
