Turn on Open Web Distribution
Activate Open Web Distribution—eligible plan, connected custom domain, public site, handle, and Settings opt-in—then verify the followable identity. Enabling does not auto-share your library.
This is the activation guide. For concepts and product philosophy, read Reach Mastodon and the open web first.
Flow: Before you begin → Enable in Settings → Choose your handle → Verify → Publish selected items.
Before you begin
Complete these in order—they are part of the task, not a separate requirements page:
- Eligible plan — Distribution appears in Settings only when your plan includes it.
- Connected custom domain — hostname and HTTPS active (same bar as launching the public site on your domain).
{slug}.artinstack.comis not the federation host. - Public website — domain resolves to your live site so people and servers can fetch pages and actor endpoints.
- Decision to go public — you accept public means public and the Terms disclosure on the enable screen.
Enable in Settings
Dashboard → Settings → General (near Custom domain / site address).
- Confirm the custom domain shows connected.
- Turn on Open Web Distribution (wording may also say Public Syndication).
- Read the short risk summary and confirm.
- Save. First enable may take a few seconds while the public actor is projected. If it fails, the previous off state is kept.
Choose your handle
Set Actor handle (letters, numbers, underscore). Your public identity becomes:
That handle is the studio identity remotes follow. Prefer a stable name. Renaming later confuses existing followers.
What enabling creates
- A followable actor on your primary custom domain.
- WebFinger / actor endpoints for compatible apps.
- Access to per-item Share controls on eligible posts and photos.
What happens to existing content
Nothing is shared automatically. Enabling does not syndicate your library, backlog, or drafts. Past posts and photos stay on your site only until you opt each one in.
What does not happen automatically
- No Instagram/Facebook page publishing.
- No likes, boosts, or reply inbox inside ArtInStack.
- No change to private vaults or confidential portfolios.
Verify
- From a Mastodon account, search
@yourhandle@your-domain. - Open the profile; check display name and bio.
- Share one test item (Choose what to share to the open web) and confirm it appears for a follower.
Publish
Use per-post and per-photo Share controls only for work you intend to distribute. Selective publishing is the product model.
How to disable
Turn Open Web Distribution off in the same Settings block. Shared items should receive deletion signals; remote caches may still retain copies.
