Migrating from Squarespace
In Settings → Import Site, choose Squarespace, enter your public site URL, Connect (password optional for gated sites), scan pages and galleries, then confirm import—pages and posts land in the workspace, gallery collections become private portfolios, and legacy paths get 301 redirects.
ArtInStack imports Squarespace pages, blog/journal posts, and gallery or project collections into your workspace. Galleries become Portfolio collections; photos and page images land in Media. You connect with your public site URL—no Squarespace API key is required. ArtInStack stores a short-lived session cookie jar only, never your visitor password.
Prerequisites
- The public Squarespace site URL you are leaving (for example
https://www.example.com). - Workspace owner login on ArtInStack (team members cannot import).
- The visitor password if the site is password-protected (used once during Connect; not stored).
- Enough storage on your plan for the media you select.
Step 1: Connect your Squarespace site
- Open Settings → Import Site.
- Select Squarespace.
- Enter Site URL — the live domain visitors use today.
- If the site uses a visitor password, check This site is password-protected.
- Click Connect Squarespace. If password-gated, enter the password in the dialog when prompted.
- When the status shows Connected, you can scan.
The session lasts about 30 minutes. Run Scan site while it is active. Disconnect clears the stored session.
Connect does not use your Squarespace account password for the admin dashboard—only the public site URL and, when needed, the visitor site password.
Step 2: Scan site
- Click Scan site.
- Wait for the Import preview — counts for pages, posts, portfolios (galleries/projects), and media.
- No content is written yet. After a successful scan, the Connect session is cleared; Connect again if you need another scan.
Scanning reads your live Squarespace site (including Fluid Engine layouts when present). Re-scan whenever the source site has changed.
Step 3: Select content and confirm
- Review Pages, Posts, Portfolios, and Media in the preview.
- Use Choose… pickers to select specific items, or toggle Import all discovered content.
- Click Confirm import.
A background job downloads CDN images, writes entities, links gallery media into portfolios, and records redirects for legacy paths. Progress appears on the same screen; open Reports when it finishes.
What is imported
| Squarespace | ArtInStack |
|---|---|
| Page | Page layout (editable tree when possible; otherwise a readable snapshot you can refine) |
| Blog / journal post | Post under /blog/… |
| Gallery or project collection | Portfolio collection (private until you enable a public page) |
| Images on pages and in galleries | Media library items |
| Legacy paths | 301 redirects to new routes — see Preserving SEO and redirects |
Imported portfolios stay private until you enable them in portfolio settings—so a scan-and-import does not suddenly publish galleries on your site.
What is not imported
| Squarespace content | Why | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Commerce products, carts, checkout | Commerce model differs | Create Products in ArtInStack; connect Stripe |
| Site chrome / theme (global header, footer, style kit) | Platform site settings are separate | Header, footer, and navigation |
| Member areas, scheduling, email campaigns | Different product modules | Recreate with platform features after core pages are live |
| Password-gated member content beyond the site visitor password | Connect covers site-level visitor access only | Publish equivalent pages privately or use client delivery |
Verifying your setup
- Connected status appears before you scan.
- Preview lists the pages, posts, and galleries you expect (design/photography projects appear under Portfolios, not as empty posts).
- Confirm import finishes with status Completed on Reports.
- Open Pages and Posts — refine and publish priority content.
- Open Portfolio — collections exist and remain private until you enable a public page.
- See After your import for reports and go-live checklist.
Troubleshooting and common pitfalls
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Connect fails | Wrong URL or password | Use the public https URL visitors see; for gated sites, enter the visitor password |
| Scan says connect first | Session expired or missing | Connect again (sessions last about 30 minutes), then Scan site |
| Gallery projects appear as empty posts | Stale scan from an older importer | Re-Connect, Scan site again, then import the Portfolios section |
| Page layout looks flat or needs polish | Snapshot or simplified block flatten | Refine in the page editor |
| Images missing | Not selected, or CDN fetch failed | Check Reports for asset failures; re-import missing Media |
| Gallery empty on the public site | Portfolio still private | Portfolio → Manage portfolio → Settings — enable the public page when ready |
| Team member cannot import | Owner-only | Workspace owner must run Import Site |
