Gallery grids and photo pages in Google Images
Your site ranks for your name. Search your name in Google Images and your photographs aren't there. Nothing is broken. A grid of thumbnails that load as you scroll gives an image crawler one page and no destination for any single photo. That's the case on most gallery builders, and it's the reason a photo needs a page of its own.
Three conditions
What earns a photo its own URL
On a public showcase portfolio
The photo belongs to a portfolio with a public page. Private portfolios, vault links, and client-delivery collections never qualify.
Not hidden from search
A portfolio marked hide-from-search is not a public showcase for this purpose. Its photos stay out of sitemap.xml and omit ImageObject markup.
Page View is on
Page View is the control for the photo surface. Turn it off for a portfolio and /photo/{id} returns not found for that collection.
The grid was never the job
ArtInStack's portfolio grid loads its images lazily, the way most grids do, because that's what keeps a long gallery fast for a person scrolling. It isn't asked to be the Image Search surface. That job belongs to the photo page.
Eligible photo pages are built from the same membership list the sitemap uses, so the URLs Google is told about are the URLs that exist. The grid is for visitors. The photo page is for Image Search.
What each photo page gives Google
One image, its caption and title, breadcrumbs, and ImageObject markup carrying license, credit, copyright, and creator, plus EXIF when it's present. That's a page about a single photograph, which is the shape Image Search is built to read. For how that rights data reaches Google, see The structured data this platform emits and Licensable badge vs. IPTC.
One control, one gate
Page View is the product control: turn it on for the portfolios whose photos you want found, leave it off where the grid should be the only public view. Showcase eligibility is the SEO gate, and it's set by how you've organized your work, so a photo you've kept private can't be exposed by a toggle.
Eligible, not guaranteed
A photo page gives an image a fair chance. It doesn't decide whether Google indexes it or where it appears. Newer and lower-authority domains are indexed more slowly and more selectively, so expect a fraction of your photos in Image Search, not all of them. To check one, run a /photo/ URL through URL Inspection in Search Console. Each photo page is also a public, shareable URL, which is the point and the trade-off.
Turn on Page View where you want Image Search to have a front door
The grid stays for visitors. /photo/{id} is for Google — when the portfolio is a public showcase and not hidden from search.
