Search & Discovery·Explain

IndexNow, honestly

If you're turning on IndexNow hoping it gets your new gallery into Google faster, it won't. Not because it's broken. Google was never on the other end of it.

Dated claim

Hold this as of early 2026

  1. Google is not a consumer

Google has tested IndexNow since 2021 without adopting it. It still runs its own crawl queue, sitemap ingestion, and an Indexing API limited to job postings and livestreams. None of those talk to IndexNow.

  2. Who actually listens

Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam, and Yep. Submit to the shared endpoint and they get notified within minutes instead of waiting on their own crawl schedule.

  3. Landing URLs, not every asset

The useful ping is the page, post, or gallery someone lands on. Individual photo and product URLs are high-volume noise on a secondary channel.

  4. Secondary on purpose

It does not replace a verified Search Console property or a sitemap. Off until you have a reason to notify Bing-adjacent engines faster.

The one fact that matters

Accurate as of early 2026. Google's IndexNow position is one of the few things in this guide that could change without much warning, so treat the specific claim as dated, not permanent.

A wave of 2026 "instant indexing" SEO tools has been selling IndexNow integration as a general indexing accelerant without naming which engines that actually reaches. It's not dishonest exactly. It's just missing the one qualifier that changes what the feature is worth to you. If most of your traffic is Google (true for the overwhelming majority of photography sites), IndexNow is a nice-to-have on the margins, not the thing doing the heavy lifting.

The split checklists won't mention

ArtInStack can notify the engines that actually listen when a public page, post, or gallery is published or updated. Hidden, unpublished, and maintenance URLs are not sent. Individual photo and product URLs are not sent either. That's a scope choice, not a half-built feature: those URLs churn constantly, and pinging every one would be noise on a channel that isn't Google.

The sitemap and IndexNow are not two copies of the same list. Photo detail URLs can appear in sitemap.xml (Google's path) and still never get an IndexNow ping. Public galleries can get an IndexNow ping and still not appear in sitemap.xml. Neither is "every public URL."

What still does the Google work

Nothing about IndexNow substitutes for Search Console and your sitemap. That pairing (sitemap.xml plus a verified Search Console property) remains the only path that reaches Google specifically. See What Search Console is for.

Where IndexNow actually earns its keep

Two places worth knowing about, beyond the direct Bing/Yandex/Naver/Seznam coverage: DuckDuckGo and Yahoo both run on Bing's index, so pinging Bing indirectly reaches them even though neither has adopted IndexNow independently. AI answer engines that lean on Bing's index (several do, for web-grounded results) benefit from the same faster discovery. That's a real, if secondary, reason instant pings matter more in 2026 than they did when the protocol launched. It's no longer just a "Bing SEO" play.

The honest verdict

Use it if you publish frequently and want Bing-adjacent visibility a little faster, or if a meaningful slice of your audience finds you through that index. Don't use it expecting it to move your Google position, and don't treat it as a substitute for verifying Search Console and submitting a sitemap.

Ping the engines that actually listen

IndexNow is a Bing-adjacent courtesy. Google still wants a verified property and a sitemap.
